Volunteers Employed by Ineligible Companies

Neonatal nurses representing neonatal nursing and employed by ineligible companies may be considered for volunteer service in the organization with the following policies established to guide their service and limit industry involvement and influence. Who qualifies as a volunteer employed by an ineligible company?

Neonatal nurses representing neonatal nursing and employed by ineligible companies. The Standards for Integrity and Independence (as followed by ANCC) clearly distinguish between eligible companies and ineligible companies, with ineligible companies generally defined as those whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by patients or consumers.

Eligibility & Term Length

Only one volunteer employed by an ineligible company can serve on the NANN Board of Directors or NANN-AP Council at a time. Only one volunteer employed by an ineligible company may serve on a committee or task force at a time. A volunteer employed by an ineligible company can only serve for one two-year, non-renewable term. Volunteers employed by ineligible companies are unable to serve on educational committees, task forces, or work groups. 

Requirements

If selected for volunteer service, neonatal nurses representing neonatal nursing and employed by an ineligible company have the following requirements in addition to policies for the specific role to which they were elected/selected:

  • Must sign all standard NANN volunteer agreements, including but not limited to:
    • Conflict of interest
    • ANCC disclosure form 
    • Commitment to serve
  • Must sign a non-disclosure affidavit (NDA).
  • Must recuse themselves from volunteer conversations on topics of conflicting interest.

Restrictions

If selected for volunteer service, neonatal nurses representing neonatal nursing and employed by an ineligible company have the following restrictions in addition to policies for the specific role to which they were elected/selected:

  • May serve as a member, but not in a chair role of a committee or task force.
  • May not serve as a Special Interest Group (SIG) facilitator.
  • May serve as a Director-at-Large, Staff Nurse Director-at-Large, or NANN-AP Council Member-at-Large but not as President-Elect, President, Immediate Past President, Secretary/Treasurer, NANN-AP Council Chair-Elect, NANNN-AP Council Chair, or NANN-AP Council Immediate Past Chair. Note that as a Director-at-Large, Staff Nurse Director-at-Large, or NANN-AP Council Member-at-Large, a volunteer employed by an ineligible company is limited to one two-year, nonrenewable term. 
  • May not serve on the Executive Committee.
  • May not serve in any role (chair, member, or liaison) on any educational committee, task force, or work group, including but not limited to: Accredited Provider Program Director (APPD), Advanced Practice Summit Committee, Annual Conference Committee, Education Strategic Coordinating Committee, and Research Committee.
  • Must not work in an industry considered to be in direct competition with the association by the Board of Directors.
