We replace suction canisters every 24 hrs - we have dated adn timed stickers that are filled out when the new suctions cansiters are placed.

Did anyone do a study to determine that once a week was the best practice or did you find literature to support that?

We replace everything every 24 hours or more frequently if we contaminate anything. We use separate suction containers for ett suctioning and oral suctioning.

Among other things our VAP bundle includes changing the suction canisters and tubing once each week. The nurses change the oral suction and the respiratory therapists change the ET suction set ups. We do it every Wednesday on 11-7 shift. The inline suction catheters are also changed on each Wednesday. We change the "little sucker" suction device that we use for oral suctioning every 24 hours or if the tip touches anything other than the holder and we keep the holder away from the heat of the bed (warmer, incubator) by taping it to the bed away from any heat. Hope this helps you a bit. What do you do at your hospital?
