Screening Breast Milk

By Karen Canavan posted 03-28-2012 07:43 PM

Our hospital is having a "Mock JACHO Survey" this week.  Surveyor asked, "How do you screen EBM?"  "How do you know if the mother is taking any medications that would be contraindicated for breast feeding?  She was not satisfied with any of our answers.  Do any of you have a specific policy regarding screening of breast milk and documenting it?

Thanks,
Karen

We ask the mom to state the medications she is taking. Since we give only mom's own breast milk to her own baby, there is no reason to screen for anything else. If there is any suspicion or doubt as to her honesty or behavior, we bring those concerns forward and will ask for a urine specimen from her if not already done and screen for drug use. If she has a disease that is contraindicated for breast feeding, that would also have been gotten in her history or verified by blood tests.
