As we begin a new legislative year in Congress, environmental and health groups will again continue to promote legislation to decrease our health risks to environmental toxins and contaminants. I will periodically share news regarding what is happening at the state and federal level that we as nurses should be monitoring as health care professionals. There are several resources currently available to stay up to date on current environmental health issues. First, I recommend the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE,
http://envirn.org/
) and second, the Environmental Health News eNewsletter,
http://environmentalhealthnews.org/
. More and more research is showing the close links between health and environmental contaminates. Studies have found hundreds of chemicals in umbilical cord blood and breast milk. Nursing has a role to educate ourselves and our patients on all factors that may affect our health.
