Does anyone use a double lumen UVC? If so, how do you maintain it (flush, how often etc,) Any special nursing considerations?
Thank you,
Margaret McDonnell

We also use double lumen UVC catheters, our main line usually is for our fluids, and our second lumen is also used for antibiotics. We use 0.5ml of 10unit/ml of heparin every 6 hours.

We also use double lumen UVC catheters. The primary port is used for continous IV fluids, the secondary port is used for medications. The secondary port is locked & flushed with 0.5 mL of 10unit/mL heparin every 4 hours.

Yes, we use double lumen UVC catheters. The primary port is used for IV fluids, and the second port is for IV meds. We infuse 1/2NS with 1:1 heparin at 0.5ml/hr through the second port. Sometimes, larger infants require a higher rate up to 1.0mls/hr to prevent back-flow of blood. The med line is "Y'd" into the second port tubing. Our IV tubing (even tubing infusing TPN) is changed every 72 hours. Exceptions include interlipids, med tubing, any tubing with visible blood, and when the tubing has been disconnected for any reason. Then the whole administration set is changed every 24 hours.
