Dress Code for NICU

By Laura Bravos posted 01-07-2015 12:14 PM

Hi!  I would like to find out if there is any evidence to support wearing hospital-provided scrubs for NICU staff (i.e., decrease in infection rates)?  We are moving toward bringing our own scrubs to work and donning at work.  Is that what most NICUs are doing now?  Thanks so much for your feedback!  ~Laura Bravos  (laura.bravos@alexian.net)

We wear our own scrubs (standard navy blue for all hospital)  in the NICU if not assigned C/S.  For regular deliveries we wear a yellow cover gown. For C/S we wear hospital issued scrubs and have to change here.

We are provided scrubs at our hospital and we wear them into the OR for C-sections.

We have been using our own scrubs for years now and most hospitals I have worked at. We use disposable gowns if we have to hold the babies.

We bring in our own laundered scrubs from home. This was approved by our infectious disease Chair many years ago. The problem arises when one has to to go to the OR for a preemie delivery. Then we must change again or don a white "haz mat" suit and then put the OR cover gown over all that.

Our nurses wear their own scrubs from home. We do not allow long sleeves, once scrubbed in for day, sleeves need to stay above elbows, no stone rings or watches/bracelets allowed. If sleeves are pulled down, then RN is supposed to rescrub.

Our state regulations require "clean scrubs" to be worn which leaves quite a bit of room for interpretation. Our managers decided long ago that we have to carry in our scrubs from home and change once we get there. It is an archaic practice without any scientific basis. In fact, there is no evidence to support the use of parents/visitors wearing cover gowns either, and they still insist upon that as well. Oh, and the gowns worn by parents/visitors are short-sleeve! What is the point? Just another example of doing something just because that is how it has always been done.

Years ago, we were provided scrubs by the hospital but now for many years, the nurses wear their own scrubs and we wear them in from home. We transitioned from bringing them in and changing at work but eventually just went to wearing them in. We have not had any issues with this.
